Child Nutrition

Child Nutrition

At Le Monde International School, we believe that proper nutrition is essential to a child’s success in and out of the classroom. Our nutrition program is designed to provide healthy, balanced meals that support physical health, cognitive development, and overall well-being. By offering nutritious options, we aim to fuel our students for a full day of learning and growth.

  • Our meal program follows federal and state nutritional guidelines to ensure students receive well-rounded meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and low-fat dairy. We are committed to providing meals that are not only nutritious but also appealing to young palates.

  • We understand that every child is unique, and so are their nutritional needs. Our program accommodates a variety of dietary restrictions and preferences, including allergies, cultural dietary practices, and vegetarian options. If your child has specific needs, we encourage parents to communicate with our nutrition team to ensure their meals are safe and satisfying.

  • We are proud to participate in Oklahoma’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), a statewide initiative designed to introduce students to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day.

Through this program, students are offered fresh produce as a healthy snack option outside of regular meal times. The goal is simple but powerful: to encourage healthy eating habits, expose students to new foods, and support overall wellness and academic readiness.

At Le Monde, this program aligns closely with our commitment to the whole child. By incorporating nutritious food choices into the school day, we help students build lifelong habits that support focus, growth, and well-being.

  • We are dedicated to ensuring that no child goes hungry. Families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals can apply confidentially through our office. We work to eliminate barriers so that every student has access to nutritious food throughout the school day.

  • We are excited to launch our International Lunch Series, a special opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate the many cultures represented within Le Monde International School.

Throughout the year, we will invite families, staff, and community members to join us for shared meals that highlight the diverse backgrounds, traditions, and stories of our students and educators. These lunches are more than just food—they are a way to honor identity, build understanding, and strengthen the sense of belonging that defines who we are as an international school.

At Le Monde, our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The International Lunch Series allows us to live out our mission by learning with and from one another, celebrating global perspectives, and deepening the connections that make our community so special.

We look forward to gathering around the table together and celebrating the cultures that make Le Monde, Le Monde.

  • Le Monde International School Comprehensive Wellness Policy

    Preamble

Le Monde International School is dedicated to fostering the optimal development of every student. The school recognizes that student success—spanning academic, personal, developmental, and social growth—is strongly supported by learning environments that are positive, safe, and promote health throughout the school year. Research consistently shows that good nutrition and regular physical activity, both before and during the school day, are closely correlated with positive student outcomes, including higher academic achievement, improved standardized test scores, reduced absenteeism, and better cognitive functioning. Conversely, inadequate intake of essential food groups, such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, is linked to lower academic performance. Students who participate in physical activity through active transportation, recess, activity breaks, high-quality physical education, and extracurricular programming also demonstrate stronger academic results. This policy affirms Le Monde International School’s commitment to cultivating environments and opportunities that support healthy eating and physical activity during the school day while minimizing commercial distractions. The policy applies to all students, staff, and school settings.

    Policy Goals

    • Ensure that students have access to healthy foods throughout the school day, including reimbursable meals and other foods available on campus, in line with federal and state nutrition standards.
    • Provide students with quality nutrition education to nurture lifelong healthy eating habits.
    • Offer regular opportunities for students to be physically active before, during, and after the school day.
    • Promote schoolwide nutrition and physical activity initiatives that support overall student wellness.
    • Encourage and support school staff in modeling and practicing healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors.
    • Engage families and the broader community in supporting wellness efforts and reinforcing healthy habits beyond the school setting.
    • Establish and maintain an infrastructure for implementing, overseeing, communicating, and monitoring the school’s wellness policy and its goals.

    I. School Wellness Committee (“The 365 Club”)

    Committee Role and Purpose

Le Monde International School will convene a representative School Wellness Committee (SWC)—or operate within an existing school health committee—which will meet at least twice each year. This committee is responsible for setting goals and overseeing the development, implementation, evaluation, and periodic review of the school’s health, safety, and wellness initiatives, including the School Wellness Policy. The committee supports a coordinated approach to both student and staff wellness and ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements.

    Committee Membership

The School Wellness Committee shall represent all grade levels served by the school and, wherever possible, reflect the diversity of the school community. Membership may include, but is not limited to:

The Executive Director or their designee will convene the School Wellness Committee, facilitate the development and updating of the School Wellness Policy, and ensure its implementation and compliance schoolwide.

Le Monde International School also maintains a Healthy & Fit School Advisory Committee as required by Oklahoma Senate Bill 1627. This committee meets at least twice per year and includes representatives from administration, teachers, physical education, child nutrition, health services, parents, students, and community members. The Executive Director or designee is responsible for convening the committee and ensuring compliance.

    II. Implementation, Monitoring, and Accountability

    Implementation Plan

Le Monde International School will develop, implement, and maintain a written plan to manage and coordinate the execution of the School Wellness Policy. This plan will clearly outline roles, responsibilities, actions, and timelines tailored to the school. It will specify who is responsible for implementing changes, define expected outcomes, and identify locations and timelines for implementation. The plan will include measurable goals and objectives related to nutrition standards for all foods and beverages available on campus, food and beverage marketing, nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, physical education, and other school-based activities supporting student wellness.

To ensure effective implementation, the school may use evidence-based tools such as the Healthy Schools Program online resources and the CDC’s School Health Index to conduct assessments, create action plans, and produce annual progress reports.

    Recordkeeping

Le Monde International School will keep records demonstrating compliance with the wellness policy requirements. Records will be stored in the school’s administrative office and will include, but are not limited to:

    • The current written School Wellness Policy
    • Documentation of compliance with community involvement requirements (including efforts to solicit committee membership and evidence of stakeholder participation)
    • Annual wellness policy progress reports
    • Triennial wellness policy assessments
    • Documentation of compliance with public notification requirements, specifying how the policy, reports, and assessments are made available, and efforts to notify families

    Annual Progress Reports

Le Monde International School will compile and publish an annual report detailing the implementation and progress of the School Wellness Policy. This report will be published at a consistent time each year and will include:

    • Information about public access to the School Wellness Policy
    • A summary of progress towards wellness policy goals
    • Descriptions of related school events or activities
    • The name, title, and contact information of designated wellness policy leaders
    • Information for families and community members on joining the School Wellness Committee

The annual report will be available at the school office and through appropriate communication channels, with active notification to families about its availability.

    Triennial Progress Assessments

At least once every three years, Le Monde International School will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the School Wellness Policy to evaluate its implementation and effectiveness. This triennial assessment will include:

    • Evaluation of compliance with the wellness policy
    • Comparison to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s model wellness policy
    • A summary of progress toward the policy’s goals

The Executive Director or designee will manage the triennial assessment process, with support from the School Wellness Committee and school leadership. Families will be actively notified of assessment results.

    Policy Review and Updates

The School Wellness Committee will review and update the policy as needed, based on annual progress reports, triennial assessments, changing priorities, achievement of goals, new health research, advances in technology, and updated federal or state guidance. At a minimum, the policy will be reviewed and updated every three years following the triennial assessment.

    Community Involvement, Outreach, and Communications

Le Monde International School values community input and recognizes that meaningful engagement starts with awareness of the School Wellness Policy. The school will actively communicate opportunities for parents, students, staff, and community members to participate in the policy’s development, implementation, review, and updating through multiple channels suited to the school community. Families will be informed about improvements to school meals, compliance with federal and state standards, the availability of child nutrition programs and application procedures, and adherence to Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.

Wellness policy information, updates, and involvement opportunities will be communicated using both electronic and non-electronic methods, including email, the school website, newsletters, family presentations, and materials sent home. All communications will be culturally and linguistically appropriate and delivered through channels consistent with other important school information. At least annually, families and the community will be notified of the availability and content of the School Wellness Policy and any updates, using these communication methods for annual progress reports and triennial assessments.

    III. School Meals Nutrition

    School Meal Programs

Le Monde International School is committed to serving nutritious, high-quality meals that support student health, academic success, and lifelong healthy eating habits. School meals will include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk; be moderate in sodium; low in saturated fat; and contain zero grams of trans fat per serving. Meals will meet students’ nutritional needs within age-appropriate calorie requirements, support healthy growth and development, help prevent childhood obesity, and accommodate cultural food preferences and special dietary needs.

Free, safe, unflavored drinking water will be available to all students throughout the school day and in all school settings, including where meals are served. Students may carry approved water bottles filled with water during the school day.

    Competitive Foods and Beverages

All foods and beverages sold or served to students outside the reimbursable school meal programs during the school day (“competitive foods”) must meet or exceed USDA Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards, unless otherwise permitted for approved fundraisers. These standards apply across all sale locations, including a la carte, vending machines, school stores, and food carts.

    Celebrations, Rewards, and Fundraising

Marketing that contradicts student wellness goals is prohibited. Food and beverage marketing includes brand logos, signage, vending machine exteriors, equipment branding, publications, and promotional materials.

    IV. Physical Activity

Le Monde International School recognizes that children and adolescents should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. A substantial portion of this activity can be provided through a comprehensive, school-based physical activity program (CSPAP), which includes physical education, recess, classroom-based activity, active transportation to and from school, and before- and after-school activities. The school is committed to providing these opportunities as part of a balanced approach to student wellness. Physical activity opportunities will supplement, not replace, physical education instruction. Participation in Let’s Move! Active Schools initiatives is encouraged to support a comprehensive approach to physical activity.

Physical activity during the school day—including recess, classroom breaks, and physical education—will not be withheld as a punishment. To the extent possible, school grounds, facilities, and equipment will be maintained in safe condition to support student physical activity, with regular inspections and repairs as needed.

    Physical Education

Le Monde International School will provide students with physical education through an age-appropriate, sequential curriculum aligned with national and state standards. Instruction will promote the benefits of an active lifestyle, support lifelong fitness skills, and incorporate essential health education concepts. All students will have equitable opportunities to participate, with appropriate accommodations for inclusion and accessibility.

Elementary students will receive physical education for a minimum of 120 minutes per week throughout the school year.

Essential Physical Activity Topics in Health Education

Health education instruction will address, but not be limited to, the following topics:

    • Benefits of physical activity for physical, mental, and social health

    Recess (Elementary)

Elementary students will be provided with at least 20 minutes of recess on most school days. Recess will complement, not substitute for, physical education. Outdoor recess will be held when weather permits; indoor recess will include activities to promote physical movement whenever possible.

If recess occurs before lunch, staff will ensure appropriate handwashing or sanitizing before meals. Staff supervising recess will encourage physical activity and, when feasible, model active behavior with students.

    Physical Activity Breaks

Students will have periodic opportunities for physical activity or stretching throughout the school day on most days. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate short (3–5 minute) activity breaks during instructional time to support student focus and readiness to learn. These breaks will supplement—not replace—physical education, recess, or class transitions. The school will provide staff with resources and tools to support classroom-based physical activity.

    Active Academics

Teachers are encouraged to integrate movement and kinesthetic learning strategies into core academic instruction—such as math, science, language arts, and social studies—when appropriate. The school will offer professional development and instructional resources to highlight the connection between physical activity and learning. Teachers are encouraged to model positive behavior by participating in movement activities when feasible.

Le Monde International School will offer and promote opportunities for students to participate in physical activity before and after the school day through extracurricular programs, enrichment activities, and other organized or informal opportunities.

Wellness efforts will be coordinated across physical activity, education, nutrition, mental health, and other student support services to ensure complementary, aligned initiatives focused on student well-being, optimal development, and academic achievement.

The school is encouraged to integrate health and wellness concepts into curricular areas when appropriate, such as nutrition instruction in mathematics or science, with guidance from school leadership or curriculum specialists. Efforts to pursue recognition, grants, or funding opportunities for healthy school environments will be coordinated with the wellness policy and involve the School Wellness Committee. All school-sponsored wellness events will include opportunities for physical activity.

Staff participation in wellness and health promotion initiatives is encouraged, and the school will support accessible, free, or low-cost programs focused on healthy eating, physical activity, and overall well-being.

When feasible, the school will provide professional learning opportunities and resources to assist staff in promoting student wellness. These may include strategies for integrating movement into instruction, incorporating nutrition concepts into academic content, and understanding the connection between health, wellness, and student achievement. Professional learning will align with ongoing school improvement and instructional priorities.
